Hi to all listers
I am new to this list and have little knowledge of the research
interests of the list users. I wondered if anyone could help me to get
started with a particular enquiry that I have with regard to my family
history. I am searching for any connection to Lisette Sophia Amalie
WUNDSCH who, according to the IGI lists, married a John JOPLING in
Gelsenkirchen, Westfalen, Prussia on 1 July 1862.
Are there any relatives of the WUNDSCH family who would like to make
contact with me ? Or, can anyone point me to a genealogical list or
society relevant to Gelsenkirchen ?
My story is as follows :-
I am researching the family name JOPLING and have now established the
family line back to a Jacob JOPLING of Lambton, County Durham, England
who was married in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, England on 27th
April 1730.
The reason why I am contacting the Westfalen list here is to ask whether
anyone is able
to assist me in tracing a family connection with Prussia during the
mid-nineteenth century and in particular to the family name WUNDSCH.
The name of my great grandfather was "Rudolph JOPLING" and anecdotal
family stories and
rumours throughout my childhood reported that he was 'German'. To my
surprise, when looking in the 1881 census for Durham, England, I found
that he, his elder brother William (aged 13) and his sister Laura
(aged11), had all been born in what is recorded as "Prussia".
However, far from being German, Rudolph's father was named John JOPLING,
a Durham miner, the son of a William JOPLING, a descendant of the Jacob
referred to above.
There is also another recorded connection to Prussia through a "Mary
Hannah Joppling" who is recorded in the 1881 census as having been born
in Prussia (British subject [sic]). Mary Hannah originates from another
branch of the Jopling family and there is a direct, identifiable
connection to Rudolph. The IGI Index lists Mary Hannah JOPLING as being
christened in Gelsenkirchen on February 1 1859, the daughter of Joseph
JOPLING and Hannah KAY.
So, it would appear that there were "Joplings" present in Prussia from
about 1859 onwards. But under what circumstances and why ?
John Jopling returned to England in time for the1881 Census which gives
the information that he was widowed and back living with his three
children in Low Moorsley, near Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham, England.
It gives rise to the speculation that he travelled to Prussia to work,
married there and had children by Lisette WUNDSCH.
As you can see I have little to go on and any information regarding how
to research the JOPLING family name in Prussia would be gratefully
received.
Thank you for reading this.
