Dear David, While I agree with you that the greens in Arua have irreversibly and tragically destroyed, West Nile Golf Club (Arua Golf Club) course actually remains the only greenery to talk of in Arua town. So the course has not been "reduced to a jumble " as you claim. In fact the course is still one of the best in the country after Uganda Golf Club and Entebbe Club and may be Tooro Club. If it were not for the few golfers we have in Arua, this course would have actually gone already. One thing for sure is that the Club has applied many times to lease the course for golf to no avail courtesy of the municipal officials (the town planners). So if we don't join hands now, the "jumble" will become a conglomeration of tired and retired unfinished buildings habouring rogues and reptiles I don't know what we shall refer to it as that time. Otherwise, thanks for the concern. Ayibo Benard General Secretary West Nile Golf Club

Am sorry to have joined rather late. However, better late than never. I fully agree with a master plan for "Arua City". I would like to draw our attention to what is going on in the town now. The 'greens' that marked this down making it one of the best and having the best golf course has been reduced to another jumble, a typical ill planned 3rd world shanty town. I would like to draw our attention to the importance of greens in a city/town: a) Absorption of the huge amount of Carbon dioxide produced by the increased number of automobile and people b) Psychologically a much needed natural therapy to reduce stress of the hassles of the day (Healthier than the noisy evening joints. However, the joints may work for some but not all) c) Natural beauty within reach. My other concern is what is breaking the old houses to put up new ones. The Old houses carry our history, I propose they are preserved and protected. These may in future show our children the realities of how far we come from. Cities must expand to other parts. I have been to many parts of Germany & Italy, I saw the pride and beauty of their history in the buildings (Antiquities is all about preservation). About Barifa, I think a replacement twice its size must be put in place. This takes us to the health of our environment. The last time I was In Arua during the Ombaci OBs re-union I was shocked by the appalling appearance of the vegetation. I thought if we do not look that direction as well, we may be heading for environmental disaster. I might have sounded negative though and through, but all I am interested is a cautious more in the direction of this brilliant idea which I support wholeheartedly. Among us, we do have an extremely qualified Urban Planner in Akolo Akonyu (BC - Canada). I have never visited any part of West Nile but if am to go by what I have noticed in all Uganda Urban centres I have visited, it might not be any different. Uganda is in for a huge Urban Planning Calamity if nothing is done fast enough. Every Urban Centre must take a critical look at Kampala and avoid the mistakes that are currently unfolding. Gulu under the leadership of "Chairman" Mao is embarking on a Master Plan that will make Gulu Northern Uganda's "Capital" and given the economic future potential of southern Sudan and northern Uganda, that might be the place to be. So does Arua and other West Nile Urban Centres want to be left behind? I do not think so - so roll up those sleeves and lets see what we can do. For those in my category I suggest we begin a registration desk for the Barifa Forest plots and hand over the list to Arua Town Clerk and our good friend Mayor Charles Asiki so that we seriously take charge of the planned development of that particular part of West Nile that could serve as a module for other towns in the region. I saw some communication on West NileNet on this subject but it seems to have phased out. I propose one of the engineers in our community of West NileNet takes the task of getting the proposed plan for the development of the area and inform members on details of the plans (Residential, School, Restaurant, recreation, health centre etc) and then cause folks to register as a group or individuals in particular project they wish to pick on and then we move as a group to secure the plots after the registration of interests. I propose Eng. Patrick Okuni and Caleb Alaka for the task of leading us in this proposal.
