Thanks Steve for working on all the videos and and also summaring the
discussions. Thanks to those who have visisted the site and heard with their
own ears how the discussions took place. Those who have never got chance to
attend physically atleast have a feel of what we have been talking about.

science cafe has just touched on a small component of our issues. I hope
that we shall stop "Pool Him/her Down" strategy plans, elicit talks in the
cyberspace and join hands to support such practical initiatives to help
ourselves and out people.
You can see the ethusiasm in the community and the yearning for knowledg
sharing from the videos
I encourage those who are in Arua particularly to come for the next cafe
discussions which will be advertised later. Other interested groups in
Kampala and Entebbe can join those near them or let us know but for Arua we
shall maintain the one location for the moment until we are able to open
another one.

Today I met a doctor from Uganda in a conference in Portugal and she was
telling me that West Nile has a very big problem of Heptitis B and right now
many people are infected in WestNile and at this rate the life span of a
Westniler is 40 years. If you got the disease from childhood, that is the
maximum you can live. Those who know about Heptitis B know that it is a very
infectious viral disease without cure and it is transmitted through the same
routes as HIV but in addition can be transmitted through any body
fluid(formites) and the virus lives longer on surfaces than HIV. So any
contact with such a surface results into transmission so long as there is
some loose skin. It is very cronic and destroys liver and cause liver
cancer. If you have one infected person in a family, count every body in the
family infected

According to her, this is a more crucial public health issue that needs
urgent attention than HIV but she was so disturbed that programs being taken
to Arua do not even include this and Arua people cannot define their
priorities. She also says that exposing people for HIV test and carrying
invasive procedures in presence of Hep B is more dangerous because the
health worker carries the infection from one person to another, patients
touch each other, spiting on the floor and touching sink handles, doors are
all promote transmission. She told me she can share the documentation about
the infection prevalence and incidence with If I am interested. This is more
scaring if we see the poor hygiene situation in our health facilities
The good thing about the infection is that it is an immunisable disease and
those who have immunised all there children are lucky but many of us didnt
have it because the diease was included into immunisation schedule later and
therefore are at very high risk, the disease is diagnosed accidently because
it is a silent killer, this means many of us are already carrying it.

This is very disturbing to hear. This lady said she visited four patients in
Arua who were all at age of 38-40 but already had liver cancer due to Hep
B.
We shall include this as one of the discussion topics in Arua but we need
another strategy to deal with it more than just health education.
I encourage all of us to think proactively towards this issue that needs
immediate attention. I though this was important to share.

Thanks

Christine
