Thanks Alfred for the update. I finally got intouch with Vasco in the evening
and the turn up for the half day yesterday was so tremendous. They treated
about 600 people yesterday but unfortunstely about 80 people tested with
diabetes and the doctors were so shocked to see this coming out of the sample
they had treated. They wondered if there was epidemic of diabetes in Arua.
Coincidentally diabetes day this year is held in Arua today with the theme
"prevention and education". I talked to some of the ministry of health
officials yesterday evening to ask them flag this in their talks to people
today. The Science cafe discussion held in Enyau Kebiri last month was perhaps
timely and more of this needs to happen. As we wait to see how the figures for
diabetes will increase during the week, this is already a flagship issue for
west Nile given the percentage. It is an indication of unhealthy culture of
feeding or food types. Perhaps if somebody has evidence
to show why particularly diabetes is high in West Nile given the relatively
high figures of malnutrion, that would help focus the debate from being general
to some specifics for the region.
Alfred perhaps you need to flag this in your adverts during the week.
Despite the struggles we faced to get the doctors cleared by medical council
and the financial strains being faced in the process for local transport and
accomodation, finally the payment is in seeing people receive services. The
efforts were not invain. Today again the population is uncontrollable.
The idea of hosting them for dinner would be very good. They said they were
coming to see the need so that they can plan based on the need so definately
they will be interested in coming back and as a community we need to see how to
take advantage of this. The group therefore needs to discuss this so that we
dont leave it Vasco alone next time.
I cannot thank Vasco and the Nile Care team enough for intiating this idea and
for the support on ground from various people and particularly Alfred you have
done the best beyond your ability for the publicity
