TODAY'S WORD: Hyper-Threading

See our definition with hyperlinks at

Hyper-Threading is a technology used by some Intel microprocessors
that allows a single microprocessor to act like two separate
processors to the operating system and the application programs that
use it. It is a feature of Intel's IA-32 processor architecture.

With Hyper-Threading, a microprocessor's "core" processor can execute
two (rather than one) concurrent streams (or threads) of instructions
sent by the operating system. Having two streams of execution units
to work on allows more work to be done by the processor during each
clock cycle. To the operating system, the Hyper-Threading
microprocessor appears to be two separate processors. Because most of
today's operating systems (such as Windows and Linux) are capable of
dividing their work load among multiple processors (this is called
symmetric multiprocessing or SMP), the operating system simply acts
as though the Hyper-Threading processor is a pool of two processors.

Intel notes that existing code will run correctly on a processor with
Hyper-Threading but "some relatively simple code modifications are
recommended to get the optimum benefit."

WHATIS DISCUSSION FORUM | Challenge #1: Too many administrators!

If Scott wasn't already going bald, he'd be tearing his hair out.
Some of his company's trainers are insisting they need to have the
ability to install applications and add printers to work stations in
order to do their jobs effectively. Scott's boss, Dave, has given
strict instructions to limit user rights and doesn't want ten people
running around with local administrator privileges. What can Scott do
to meet everyone's needs?

Add your two cents to the discussion and we'll enter you to win a
magic TechTarget baseball cap!

QUIZ #27 | Security awareness for end users

Studies show that a company's biggest security threat is its own
employees. The SANS Institute recommends that organizations should
take time to educate their employees about computer security and
periodically test employees to make sure they understand the basics.
To help you in your efforts to raise security awareness in your
organization, we've created the following quiz:
