The 10 Most Misunderstood Terms in IT (Part 2) |
|
by Lowell Thing, Editor
Last week, we asked "What are they?" And this week we report on what you thought. It's based on 35 forum posts or e-mail notes we received from readers through last Friday. Only a few terms got more than one mention (ATM and bandwidth were two). We were surprised by the number and range of subject areas (we didn't expect backup and mirror, for example). With a little editorial help, here's what we think you think are "The 10 Most Misunderstood Terms in IT":
1. acronym
2. ASP
3. ATM
4. bandwidth
5. JavaScript
6. kilobit or kilobits
7. .NET
8. platform
9. server
10.Windows
"Why these?" you may well ask. To explain, we've created a new page for this list where we describe why each of these is apparently misunderstood. We also list the no less troublesome "honorable mentions" that didn't make this list. The new page is at...

Disagree with any of these? Or did we leave the most important one completely and totally out? If so, tell us at the forum we've set up for this purpose at...

From time to time, we'll let you know in this newsletter whether our Top 10 list has changed. We also plan to add a permanent link to the Top 10 list on our home page.

Application ROI
Not everyone is convinced of the value of technology in business. Lots of places are cutting IT budgets or outright refusing to invest in anything new that's IT-related. Is that really the most appropriate approach to the current environment? For those interested in pushing their agenda forward, it might worthwhile to present their proposals in light of the options value and potential ROI that they create. Find out how to convince skeptics that using IT really is in their best interest.

Reader Feedback: Will this be on the quiz? |
|
by Margaret Rouse, Assistant Editor
For many years, I taught mathematics to teenagers. Every week someone would raise their hand and ask that all-important question. "Excuse me, but will this be on the quiz?"
I'm still making up quizzes, but no one has asked me that question in years. Whatis.com readers are life-long learners. They not only volunteer to take quizzes, they take time out of their busy day to write in and tell us how they did.
For instance, last week BYTEwise wrote in to say that he got 100% on our newest quiz. That would be Quiz #28: Ethernet. He missed the bonus question but felt ok about it since he learned something new. We added his name to the whatis.com Honor Roll.
Kathy Jones took Quiz #27: Security Awareness for End Users, and also made the Honor Roll by scoring 100%. Kathy wrote "I find the quizzes most helpful in assessing my rate of IT learning. As a beginner, I find the broad and complex areas of computers\ing a bit overwhelming."
When people take the time to write in, it not only lets us know if we're on the right track with the quizzes, but it also helps us to get to know our readers and find out what kinds of IT-related questions they face in the real world.
And that helps us to build the Challenges. Challenges are another learning tool where you (the reader) try to solve various real-life IT problems. Sometimes there's one right answer, but more often than not (just as in real life) there are many ways to approach the problem -- and that's what makes reading how other people would troubleshoot the Challenge a fun way to learn.
If you haven't tried a Challenge yet, you might want to take a look at Challenge #6: Partioning a hard drive. In this challenge, power-user Rudy wants to know if there's any reason not to blow away the partitions on his new laptop.
Try the challenge
So back to the question we started with. Will this be on the quiz?
The answer is YES. Most definitely.
