Surf's up: Our Latest Discovery |
|
by Margaret Rouse, Assistant Editor
There's a TV commercial for DSL where a guy is sitting at home in front of a computer and his computer says "Alert. You have reached the end of the Internet. You have seen everything there is to see. Go back."
The guy gets up and goes back to the living room. His wife looks up and says "Honey, I thought you were surfing the Internet". The guy sighs deeply and says "Yeah. I finished it."
Every time I see the commercial it make me wonder. Do people still surf the Internet for fun?
Usually when I sit down at the computer, I'm in work mode. The Internet is serious business. But then I look at my college-age kids home for summer vacation. They're out there surfing. And last night when they called me over to share their latest discovery, I realized I am jealous -- jealous not only of the long free summer ahead of them, but of the fun they have just cruising around surfing the Web for fun. Remember those days?
This week we're going to try to recapture the feeling of joy and wonder we first felt when we discovered the Internet. We're also going to share Our Latest Discovery with you. (We don't use any single criterion for selecting Our Latest Discovery. Some sites are "useful," some are remarkable to look at and interact with, and others - well, we're not sure.)
And in turn, we'd like you to join in the fun and tell us about your latest discovery! Check through those favorite places and bookmarks. Think back to those days when you were amazed at what you could find on the Internet.
It's summer time here in the United States. Let's all go surfing!
Stop by and share your favorite Web sites. Surf's up! |

Reader Feedback: "The 10 Most Misunderstood Terms" revisited |
|
by Lowell Thing, Editor
With the help of more than 40 readers, we've made a permanent fixture out of "The 10 Most Misunderstood Terms in IT" (that's short for "information technology"). You'll find the list by scrolling down our home page and clicking on it in the "Fast References" section. Now - what's next?
I'd like to encourage us all to keep the discussion going. Possibly 10 is too small a number for the misunderstandings that all of us seem to have to deal with. Maybe there should be 20 - or 30 -or 100? As we keep refining this list, we hope to summarize the misunderstandings so that, in time, the list can become a tool for occasional reference. In other words, we aren't done yet - and we need your help. We really need to know what terms you think are misunderstood or that you misunderstand yourself so that our list will not only be longer but have the authenticity of many voices.
Is there a misunderstood term you've forgotten to tell us about?

This week's challenge:
Kennedy High School had five computer labs that were ona token ring network but operated independently. Tim, the technology teacher, was given the ok to connect the labs to each other. Should he keep the labs token ring or make the switch to Ethernet? You decide.
