How do you pronounce IT? |
|
by Margaret Rouse, Assistant Editor
We had a Word-of-the-Day recently that was a little tough to wrap your tongue around. The word was canonicalization. It's the process of making sure that data conforms to specification rules and is in an approved format.
One of our Word-of-the-Day readers told us that although they understood the definition, they didn't have a clue about how to pronounce canonicalization. We looked it up. You pronounce it "KA-nahn-nihk-uhl-ih-ZAY-shun".
Right then and there we decided that a guide for pronouncing tricky IT terms might be a useful thing to have around. Luckily for us, TechTarget's News Editor, Jon Panker, was thinking the same thing. Jon had asked editors to contribute to a pronunciation guide that moderators could use for TechTarget's popular Webcast series.
A couple of days later, thanks to Jon, we had a pronunciation key based on a working knowledge of U.S. English. It didn't take us very long to figure out that if it was useful to us, it might be useful to you. (We're quick like that.)
So without further adieu (pronounced ah-doo) the editors at whatis.com are proud to introduce our latest Fast Reference -- "How do you pronounce IT?"
SNEAK PREVIEW: How do you pronounce IT?
We think you'll agree that our list is a good start, but we're going to need your help to build it out.
Is there an IT term you often hear people mispronounce? Are there terms you once struggled with yourself when you were young and inexperienced? Let us know and we'll add them to the list. We'll also add your name as a contributor.
>> Send us your list of tricky-to-pronounce IT terms along with your own home-made suggestion for pronunciation.

Reader Challenge: Defraggers |
|
by Margaret Rouse, Assistant Editor
Anthony began to notice a significant decrease in performance on his Win2000/XP machine. Since he'd had the computer for six months, he figured it was time to defrag his hard disk. Anthony went to his network administrator.
"Jim, I think it's time I defragged my hard disk. Can you assign me temporary admin rights and I'll set up the built-in Windows defragger before I leave and let it run overnight?"
Much to Anthony's surprise, Jim said "No".
"It's not that I don't think you know what you're doing," Jim said. "It's just that if I give you rights, I have to give everyone rights -- and not everyone here is capable of defragging their workstation. Put in a service request for us to run a defragger and we'll add it to our work list."
Jim went away shaking his head. "That guy is on a power trip," he thought to himself. "Why can't I just use the built-in defragger? Now I'm going to have to wait a week or so until they get around to it."
THE CHALLENGE: How often should workstations be defragged? Is a built-in defragger the best tool for the job? Who is the best person for the job?
Take the challenge! (Or just stop by and see what everyone else thinks!)
