Now and then, even though most of us have come to take it for granted,
the Web can still amaze. This past week, my mind was boggled close to home.
TechTarget, the company of which whatis.com is a part, opened a new site
called SearchTechTarget.com which allows you to search across all 18 of our sites.
For no particular reason, we tested it with "intrusion detection." I expected
a lot of results and I knew most of them would be on our SearchSecurity.com site.
Here's what came back:
o The beginning of the whatis.com definition of my search term (and a link to the full definition)
o 190 selected results across many of our sites (almost all of them) with the first line or two of the article or webcast description or "Ask the Expert" commentary
o In a side column, 403 matches for this term on SearchSecurity.com
o 166 on SearchNetworking.com
o 156 on SearchSystemsManagement.com - and on down to...
o 7 matches on SearchDatabase.com
The term was also mentioned in 103 Expert Technical Advice pages; 23 Buyer's Guide pages; 64 Best Web Links pages; 15 White Papers, and 197 news stories (many of these, no doubt, are redundant with the selected results but the search engine groups them in different and useful ways).
Granted there's a lot to dig through here, but these are all relevant to the search term and organized usefully. Searching across 18 IT-focused sites means you exclude the many irrelevant results you would usually find across a general search engine such as Google - but also ensures that you'll get everything on a set of 18 sites devoted exclusively to information technology especially in today's workplace. And organized well.
With our first test search, we became an instant fan of our own company again! A few more searches confirmed that "intrusion detection" was no fluke. SearchTechTarget.com, we think, is going to go on our list of "Latest discoveries."
We would bookmark it ourselves, except that we've noticed that it's now listed on every whatis.com page near the very bottom of the page.

Reader Feedback: Telephone, telegraph, tell whatis.com |

by Margaret Rouse, Associate Editor
Last week we introduced you to our new Fast Guide to White Papers and told you that according to eMarketer.com, white papers are the second-most consulted source of information that corporate decision makers use.
Marge G. wanted to know, "What was number one?"
According to eMarketer.com, the most-often consulted source of information for corporate decision makers is the employee phone/e-mail directory.
It makes sense, doesn't it? If you want to know something, find the right person and pick their brain.
It's such a good idea that we're going to ask you (our knowledgeable readers) three questions to help us make future decisions about content for whatis.com.
Please tell us:
1. If you can't find an answer on whatis.com, where else do you look?
2. What area of IT will your company focus its attention on next?
3. What IT-related problem(s) keep you up at night?
If you'll take the time to answer at least one of our three questions, we'll add your name to a drawing to receive a set of whatis.com IT magnets. (We're going to give away ten sets.)
You can send your answers to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thank you! We look forward to hearing from you.
