TODAY'S WORD: workaround

See our definition with hyperlinks at
http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci868204,00.html

A workaround is a method, sometimes used temporarily, for handling a
problem when it cannot be immediately resolved so that a task or goal
can be sufficiently achieved. In information technology, a workaround
is often used to overcome hardware, programming, or communication
problems.

Workarounds are commonplace on the Internet. For example, when a file
is attached to an electronic mail (e-mail) message, the file may be
altered by programs or operating systems at the source, destination,
or nodes in between. In some cases, the use of a different e-mail
program may resolve the problem. If codes or tags are stripped from
HTML files when they are sent as attachments, the trouble can be
avoided by copying and pasting the source code, in ASCII format,
directly into the body of the e-mail message.
