Excellent and Thanks! I agree, it is more a Notification filtering problem. I have looked a bit at another product...called NotificationsWorks by http://www.atlantissoftware.com/index.shtml
it may do the job as well..... they did say they have been trying to work with Ipswitch on making WUG and 'Works play together better... but haven't rcvd much cooperation :-(. Rich, I share your pain. After much thought and deliberation on this subject I concluded that addressing this issue at the management/monitoring station level is not efficient (if you have multiple management platforms with some overlapping responsibilities you need to duplicate your work in more than one place). Expecting the device makers to address it themselves would be ideal, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. For many devices it's all or nothing - you turn snmp traps on and get bombarded with them (with very little or no way to filter the important ones at the device level), or you turn them off and do without. But all is not as hopeless as it seems. At least one product exists that would seem to address this well. I have not tested it myself, but when I read the description a lightbulb went off in my head - it sounds like the perfect solution. The product is dubiously called "TrapExploder" and was developed for use on the tradeshow floor at Networld+Interop by Concord Communications: http://www.empiretech.com/products/trapexploder/ Since I have not yet looked into the product myself, I can only judge it by the description on their webpage. Their approach certainly seems like the right one to me. If anyone has first hand experience with this product, please share your comments. Kelly.... thanks for your response, but we have heard this already from Ipswitch support. Your suggestion doesn't cover for WUG not being able to seperate traps and notices into enough bins..... the problem is that devices usually do not fit WUG's limited capability of choosing which traps to send notification for. When dumb device sends 10's of traps for one event, all at the same level, WUG sends out all the notifications swamping email and pager boxes. (At least, after working with Ipswitch support and experimenting with WUG for a year now we haven't figured it out. Maybe we are just too dumb!) What I need is some way to filter on text strings in trap/alert messages, and decide which ones to pass on to my SMS phone box or pager. If you only one to receive notification on specific SNMP traps, when you are assigning an alert to a device, check off the box next to "On SNMP trap" and in the blank box to the right of this option, include the designated trap numbers you wish to receive separated by a comma. This way you will not receive notification on all traps for a specific device, only those which you specify.
