Ian,

Are you aware that running both (assuming maps are loaded and polling
is on, for both) is doubling the WUG load on the computer? There is
really no need to run both as either provides the same capabilities,
except that the program drives the display and the service does not
(program uses slightly more resources for this reason)! I'd say you
really don't need the service running, if you must have the display.

Are you also aware that whichever starts first is the one that
provides the Web server capabilities? Some people believe that only
the service provides the Web, but that is just not true!

I'd say shut off one (service) and see what that does to CPU
utilization (if you stop the service, which normally starts first, you
will likely lose the Web, so stop the program and restart it and you
should have the web service again).

AV software can also consume resources and time, slowing down other
applications, especially if it is checking a folder used by the
application and whose contents change rapidly. Try shutting AV off and
see what the effect is. If the effect is great, then check the
configuration of AV (you should be able to configure it to ignore
folders/files, probably little/no need to check those used by WUG, at
least on a 'continous' basis).

HTH,
 Daniel Donnelly

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] WUG 8.01 Very heavy CPU Utilisation

I was running WUG 8.01 on an Compaq AP550 (PIII, 550Mhz, 512M RAM),
that had been upgraded in increments from WUG4.
It was running WUG Service, WUG Console (Reg modified), WUG WebServer,
MRTG, Jagga WARFTP server, WordTime, McAfee AV and MS Office products
(Outlook, Excel, Word).
It also ran Dameware and Checkpoint software to client sites
With 35 maps and some 300 devices even with 90s poll it was under some
duress and would frequently freeze for 10s.

I have just migrated it to a Compaq W8000 PIV, 2.6Ghz, 1G RAM) with
same configuration.
It runs much better but according to task manager the desktop WUG is
running at maximum CPU all the time.
Memory utilisation is 25%

I know thta the "recomendation" is not to run the Service and Console
together, but the console is much better than the web for what we
need.
Any ideas why WUG pushes the CPU to 100% permanently?

IanC
