Because otherwise how could it be made clear to readers that the words
"today" and "yesterday" describe overlapping periods of time whilst
the periods descirbed by "today" and "tomorrow" are mutually
exclusive?

Not to mention the humor potential from a future version of the spec
describing the interaction between multiple <canvas> elements with
reference to "canvii".
