Here's another problem an async API would automatically address:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=416912

This would get transformed from "hangs the browser" into an ever-growing
event queue, which is still problematic, but in my opinion much less so, as
it still allows other processing to occur.
