Hi, I've opened a bug about a ViewportObserver API that would allow developers to receive a digest of what nodes enter or leave the viewport (similar to MutationObserver). The bug is on the w3's bugzilla: https://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=20246
The discussion didn't go really far, it stopped a year ago but I've seen similar ideas pop up in different places(e.g. http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-web-perf/2013May/0027.html ).
