All, I've committed a failing unit test (wicket.ComponentTest) that excersises this bug. I am not sure if this is what we should expect but to the best of my knowledge, it should work as the unittest performs: all detaches of the page should be called after the ajax request is done.
I don't have a solution, but I figured that having a unit test for this case is just as valuable :-).
