One question to start me off; it seems most of the stuff is in the 1.3 branch (the trunk seems a bit empty), would that be the place to start?
Whatever your preference is. In the end, it would be great to have both. If you want to choose and have no preference, 2.0 is the future version, so that would work better in the long term (and there's less stuff of others to consider).
