Is the problem already solved?

from what I can see (and what Juergen is referring to) is that the
<span wicket:id="border"> needs a wicket:body tag in the markup.

So:
<span wicket:id="border"><!-- bunch of markup --> <wicket:body /> <!--
other bunch of markup --></span>
