I used thunderbird as mail client, and reading the user list was taking a lot of  time. It was hard to follow the discussions, and don't get me started about getting back from 3 weeks of beach leisure. When I got to gmail, my mailinglist reading went down to 10% of the time it used to take. You can read a whole discussion scanning through to see if there's something to respond to.
