Indeed that solved the problem, thanks.
I put the log4j  jar in the class path et voila.

Googling about the problem gave me the impression that I should eek out part
of my day to read up on logging. Commons-logging seems bring up gripes with
people suggesting slf4j is the way to go. This all however goes a tad over
my head at the moment and your snippet of info is much appreciated.
