Thanks for voicing your concerns. Some additional background about how we're thinking about it in case that's helpful: This workshop is part of the ACL conference, which has its benefits and drawbacks. The benefit is that we reach a large community of NLP researchers that we might not otherwise reach through more wiki-specific venues and there are stronger incentives for academic researchers to participate. The drawback is that we do not have control of costs and so while we can offer a virtual component, we do not control its price, which is quite high for someone just interested in a single workshop like this. That said, a few ways we're thinking about balancing out this issue: - We will look for opportunities to invite Wikimedians as speakers, which allows us to bring folks in for aspects without having cost be a barrier. - We are looking into sponsorship that might help to defer costs but there are no guarantees there. We would report back if that became a more concrete possibility. - While this WikiNLP workshop does have a higher barrier to entry for folks without institutional support, the Wikimedia Research team also co-organizes Wiki Workshop ( https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Workshop_2025), which is intended in part to provide a widely accessible space where it is easier for Wikimedians to participate alongside academics etc. (registration has been free the past few years).
