Compatible with existing software?

There is no linux image editing software that supports dng.

OpenEXR, in sharp contrast to DNG, is an open standard, with BSD licensed
libraries and viewers from the creator. Who happens to be Industrial Light and
Magic. It's what their movies get rendered in. (And it's more than capable of
conversion from raws with no loss of bit depth / precision.)

There's a Photoshop plugin for OpenEXR. Cinepaint supports it.

I suggest ignoring DNG, with its color space imprecision and licensing issues,
and supporting OpenEXR.
