A soft expiry would be an accompanying code comment saying "please remove this setting after 2014-06-25". A hard expiry would be PHP logic that automatically disables the setting after 2014-06-25. My personal feeling (and I have no idea if this is shared) is that this is a very sub-optimal situation that everyone would like to address. I think setting a year expiry would alleviate some concerns about principles while allowing the temporary solution to function.
