I would be the first to admit that gadgets, as well as common.css and common.js, make centralized development and deployment hard, because they make every project a little different. But then, you know, centralization is exactly the thing that made Nupedia so successful. Not. Seriously, gadgets are the prime example of community innovation. They show what the community actually needs and what the community can do. Rather than shut down community innovation, designers and developers must look at the default gadgets - in English and in other languages! - as The Number One Best source of ideas for features to productize.* -- * This last word is WMF jargon.
