They are served as PNGs, and iOS adds rounded corners and button-like
appearence to apple-touch-icon.png; if one doesn't want that, or wants to have
higher control over how exactly one's Apple Touch icon looks like,
apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png can be served instead.

In production, we serve regular PNG icons, and let iOS do its magic; I'm told
it works well.
