I noticed that FF does not URI-encode the brackets when you cut-n-paste a URL
from the location bar. Is that the problem possibly related to this
cut-n-paste problem?

Opera, IE, Chrome, etc do not seem to have this problem and there is an
upstream bug for it.

In short, if you are copying a URL from your browser into the wikitext, it is
the responsibility of the browser to URI encode the brackets. FF has a bug
that causes this not to happen. Other browsers do not.
