             Bug #: 31987
Summary: Pinch zoom does not work in iOS5 due to meta tag
           Product: MediaWiki
           Version: 1.18
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: Unprioritized
         Component: Device compatibility
        AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
        ReportedBy: morton.tho...@googlemail.com
    Classification: Unclassified

I am reporting this bug on behalf of someone who emailed OTRS with this
problem. It's got full details on the issue (see below) with a recommended fix.

Popping thi in MediaWiki because I assume it relates to the code, rather than
WMF deployment :)

----- Original Message ---

Broser: Safari Mobile
Operating System: iOS5 (5.0)
Special settings: Accessibility features enabled for iOS (voiceover off, zoom
on, reverse
screen colours off)
Text being looked at: Any page on en.m.wikipedia.org

The markup on the mobile versions of Wikipedia includes the following in the
head:

<meta name = "viewport" content = "width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0,
maximum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=0" />

The effect of this on iOS 5 Safari is it is now impossible to pinch to zoom the
page when
viewing a page on the mobile wikipedia (which is where Safari is directed by
default).

This has only been an issue since the launch of iOS 5, I didn't have any
trouble with
previous versions of iOS. I can only assume that up until now Safari would
ignore the
viewport metatag, or at least the restrictions on zooming.

As a visually impaired user, I depend on the ability of Safari to zoom web
pages heavily.
Whilst it's true that iOS also provides a system-wide screen zoom with a 3
finger tap
gesture, it is far from ideal in use (it makes scrolling around an app
difficult, and if
the app itself also suppors scrolling or swiping then things can get confused
very
easily).

Please look into removing this tag, or at least relaxin the restrictions on the
way the
page can be viewed.
