I have been thinking about this some more and I am fairly convinced now that we should not change this. The reasons: 1. In this case it is very important to be sure that people select the right Items to merge. When merging two Items they are very likely to have the same label, making it harder to distinguish them in an entity selector. 2. The special page is rarely used for merging. Most merging happens through the merge gadget and we should rather focus on adopting that into the main codebase.
