Why the fixation on the publication date alone? Why not author etc? If you
first add the source as an item, then you can put the author and
publication date etc in the source item. When adding it as a source in a
reference statement, it has the publication date in there implicitly. You
can probably also query that usage data based on the publication date or
authorship somehow. The problem is that you need to make items for the
sources you want to reference with a publication date.
