Hi Malisa, I understand now.... that makes sense. I thought you may be refering to an email. I like the way you accept challenges --- its the best way to learn about wikis.
Wow! I've just seen your user page --- I'm very impressed. You're a natural wiki editor :-). It's not unusual for new users to be surprised when someone else edits their user page. Some people don't mind, while others prefer to keep their personal space to themselves. Once you get to know members in the community -- you will learn who doesn't mind edits on their user pages. In the case of individual user pages -- a good rule of thumb is to treat user pages as a "personal space". That is to refrain from making edits on someone else's user page. If you see an opportunity to help out someone with layout or editing, a good way is to leave a note on their talk page suggesting that you might be able to help with layout etc. We keep almost all pages open for editing. However, there are a few selected pages which are protected. For example the home page of WikiEducator -- however this is not really locked down because all the content on the home page is provided using templates which are all editable. WE is committed to building wiki skills for educators and we prefer to do this in a live wiki environment, we want Newbies to experience the feeling of community. Sometimes newbies make mistakes -- that's fine. For instance, In Feb 2007 -- a Newbie attending a training workshop posted the following on the home page of WikiEducator: "i'm roza from Maldives. editing is fun when you know how." (See: http://www.wikieducator.org/index.php?title=Main_Page&diff=next&oldid=21783 ) Obviously an innocent mistake. As the home page is a "high risk" page it is protected from direct edits (but can be changed through the templates.) Fortunately in the wiki --- we can fix anything which goes wrong :-) In WE were committed to keeping our pages open -- its the wiki way. Technically it would be possible to develop features that would enable a user to lock down edits on their user page -- but this hasn't been a problem for us in the past, and I don't think that investing money for a feature like this is necessarily the best utilisation of scarce resources. On the positive side -- you've had the opportunity to start exploring the history pages and how to revert back to previous versions of a page -- a very powerful feature in the wiki. See: http://www.wikieducator.org/Wikieducator_tutorial/Collaborative_Editing/Diff_and_History Keep up the good work and appreciate your post to the main list.
