Hi Jim, Great post with valuable feedback and suggestions. This would be our first localisation under the OER Foundation as a non-profit entity. I'm very pleased and excitited that we now have the freedom to support open education, irrespective of country, language etc.
Under the restrictions of our previous host @ the Commonwealth of Learning, it was not possible to install localisations for languages that are were not official languages of the Commonwealth member states. I did put forward a special case for considering a Chinese localisation to Sir John Danile, the Chief Executive of the COL on the basis that the Chinese language is spoken extensively in Commonwealth countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand etc. Sadly the President of COL was unable to take a decision in support of this request at the time. That said, I must commend COL for its support and contributions to ensuring an independent project nurtured under its wings during our formative years. This new instance would be an excellent opportunity for WE to think about, key questions pertaining to future localisations: 1) What are the criteria WE should consider for installing localisations? 2) What support resources do we need to help and support new localisations of WE? 3) What is the critical mass of local language supporters to ensure a successful localisation? (for example I don't speak or read Mandarine :-( so I can't help with monitoring spam or inappropriate content on the Chinese wiki.) 3) What sources of funding might we tap into to help cover the costs of multiple language instances? 4) Other questions? Leo - -we rely on your enthusiasm combined with support and experience from the international WikiEducator community to help us ensure a smooth transition and successful implementation of future localisations.
