Way to go Peter! The collective impact of small corrections multiplied
across +20,000 Wikieducators adds up to a sizable workforce which can
provide free learning opportunities for all students worldwide!

I too am keen to rid the world of the shackles of learning management
systems!.

Sadly, many educators working in the formal education space do not have the
freedom to use the technologies of their choice. To be fair to our
organisations -- the management of student administration is easier and more
cost effective when combined under one roof. Also, some learners prefer the
"privacy" of cohort-based learning groups within the LMS and in some subject
disciplines - -eg Nursing, confidentiality issues may arise.

At the OER Foundation and WikiEducator -- we try to support all worlds. Jim
Tittsler (our lead software engineer) has implemented a few clever solutions
which enable educators the best of both worlds! You can read more
about our Remix
experiments <http://wikieducator.org/OERF:WikiEducator_remix_experiments>
and a few instructions <http://wikieducator.org/Help:Links> on how to do
this. In short teachers who are "forced" to use a LMS -- can still develop
OER in the wiki and easily integrate this into the local LMS.

A little interesting research data. During the Open Content Licensing for
Educators course we gave learners the option of a more structured learning
sequence in a LMS or a more open and flexible wiki alternative. We asked
learners for their opinion:

What was your preferred technology for accessing OCL4ED course materials?

   - Learning management system (Moodle site): 31%
   - WikiEducator: 20%
   - Both: 46%

Interesting results for preferred delivery technology with this group.
Clearly providing more options satisfies more learners and we can do this
cost effectively with OER developed and hosted on a wiki platform.

Cheers
Wayne
