Very well stated. The ability to oversight, or to promote a successful RfA, or to checkuser, or even to be one vote among fifteen in whether dates should be delinked--is all trivial compared to real world news like this.
Let's hope that everyone else who holds a position of similar trust (arbitrator, functionary) examines these matters and takes proactive measures to examine and remedy any other problems that may exist, both for themselves and in review of their peers.
