It's essentially already there in the sidebar (3rd link down): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Featured_content randomized Featured article, Featured List, Featured picture, Featured topic, Featured portal, Featured sound. plus a list of content that recently attained Featured-status. For FA/FL, it even loads a small excerpt, so you don't have the wait for a large article to load before deciding you would like a different selection.
