On the dutch wiki we've made quite some splits in lists. But we haven't found the best way to split them on (with over 1000 monuments in one city), either by adress, zip code or monument ID. Amsterdam with 8000 monuments is our biggest pain in the ass, as are Brugge and Gent (both 10.000 monuments) in Flanders. the size limit is there for some reason, I recall the first time I created the Amsterdam list (the 2Mb limit wasn't there yet) with all 8000 monuments this resulted in a page which couldn't be loaded, and thus not easily deleted.
