You may be correct, Ivan; I am sure that the exclusion of two candidates is likely to have been the reason that some Wikimedians chose not to vote. At the same time, 6140 individuals voted[1] in this election. This is the current number and the final tally is likely to be slightly lower once scrutineering has been completed. Nonetheless, more people have voted in this election process than any other.
Compare to previous years: - 6000 voters in 2024 - 5955 voters in 2022 - 5120 voters in both 2017 and 2021 - 5167 voters in 2015. [2] Even at 6140 voters, that is only 7% of the accounts that were eligible to vote, and that is still a better showing than we have had in prior years. It is possible that the extensive conversations about this year's ballot specifically, and the entire Board selection/election process, brought greater awareness of the elections to many communities, whose members decided to participate. I am sure that there are many people who are unhappy with current processes but voted, and many people who are fine with current processes who didn't vote. And I am also absolutely certain that there is a very large portion of the community that doesn't have any interest in this election, or the selection/election process for the Board, or even the Board itself, just as long as the servers keep running. Those of us participating in discussions, in voting, in communicating about the election, are very much the minority within the global community. I am pretty sure there is a message in that, but I'm not going to venture to guess what it is.
