Dear list subscribers, I have disabled "digests" on this mailing list. Here is a quick explanation about digests, followed by my reasoning:
"Digest mode" means the list will only send you a single email per specified period of time (a day, a week, etc.), with a collation of all the emails that were sent to the list during that interval. It is a feature that was useful in the 1980s and 1990s, when folks had rate-limited access to the Internet and were not constantly online, and their email programs had poor filtering features making high-volume lists liable to overwhelm inboxes, etc. I have disabled "digest mode" because: 1. It is 2024, and the circumstances where digests had been useful no longer exist. 2. Digests *break threads* -- when someone wants to respond to a message received in a digest, the original poster's subject line is not used, and instead the generic "digest" line is used, causing thread breakage. If someone responds to *that* response, a new partial thread is created, unless that third person was *also* using "digest" mode, in which case *anotehr* thread would be created. This is extremely frustrating for others trying to follow the conversation or read through it when catching up after a while. 3. The throttling effect digests achieve for preventing inbox inundation can easily be achieved in any modern email program (or service, such as Gmail) using the "filters" feature (example help page for Gmail <https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6579?hl=en>), to filter all messages coming from a particular mailing list into a folder (or label). 3b. The list's traffic is extremely low, anyway. I trust this does not pose any hardship for any of you, even though some of you were (perhaps unintentionally?) on "digest mode" until now. Cheers, A.
