I don't think the problem with ang.wiki is that there aren't fonts already to support required character but rather this particular user wants to use a particular family of font that imitates older English manuscripts. That's his personal preference, as most decent Unicode fonts work fine for Old English as far as I'm aware.
Of course, there is a wider issue that you mention, and that is poor support for certain characters in some languages, particularly African languages and some indigenous languages of the Americas, and that is a problem that should be solved. Currently, there is, as far as I am aware, still no solution to the fact that, for example, some languages use a regular colon as a letter, but the software renders this in links as an interwiki link (for example, a link to [[cu:wĭ]] at links to http://cu.wikipedia.org/). Some people suggested using the triangular colon, but this isn't correct.
