I looked for the search syntax in the Gerrit docs -- by the way, you should probably be looking in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/Documentation/user-search.html since that is congruent with our installation of Gerrit, version 2.4.2. I found the "file:^REGEX" operator, with the note: "Currently this operator is only available on a watched project and may not be used in the search bar." I'm sorry for the trouble. For your purpose, I suggest you create a quick HTML page and commit it into the test/mediawiki/extensions/examples repository. The search examples in the Gerrit documentation are fairly useful.
