There was a time when this would have been reasonable, but honestly over the past years the usage of the GitHub organization has grown as an origin for read-write repos such that it is much more difficult to reason about the risks of granting an arbitrary technical volunteer the "member" role there. > On Monday 17 June 2024, Bartosz Dziewoński <matma....@gmail.com> wrote: >> I'm digging up this ten-year-old message, because you may want to know >> that this solution no longer works: GitHub no longer shows your >> imported contributions in your starred repositories on your profile. >> This changed some time in April or May. >> >> You can follow the conversation about it here: >> https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/128895 The upstream discussion now explains that this is was a deliberate change made upstream with a strong indication that they will WONTFIX tasks asking for the feature to return. There is a work around that you can use today however to keep your contributions showing on your GitHub profile: fork each repo to your own GitHub namespace instead of starring it. This still requires you to remember to do this action for each new repo that you contribute to, but it is not really a worse solution in terms of toil than the discontinued upstream feature. I had a couple of other ideas that I hoped would make things generally easier for everyone, but for now they look to be either too complex, too risky, or functionally the same toil for all of you with added toil for maintaining a custom tool. I am going to keep thinking about this general problem to making is easier for Wikimedia technical volunteers to get credit for their git contributions via GitHub. Hopefully a better solution will present itself in the future. For now y'all should just hit that [fork] button with wild abandon to claim your contributions.
