We do have plans to work on them, it's covered a little on the roadmap:

There's also an open bug on this issue tracking the development:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41716

That said, it's difficult to set a timeline for when language variants will
be fully supported.
