Versions with "wmf" in their number are very tailored and configured for installation on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation sites. Nothing there is a secret, but you probably don't need it to run VisualEditor on your wiki.
For a private site you should probably get a stable release of MediaWiki, such as 1.22 or 1.21.3. That said, the VisualEditor is a very experimental and quickly developing piece of software so it's imaginable that it will need the very latest MediaWiki version straight from the Gerrit master branch.
