Subject: Re: Computer Died-Help! -Update
seems that only Asus approved distributors can supply the "Asus brand" product, but everybody can supply ASRock.
Even so, Asus has suffered with quality problems for a long time. So much so that I now only recommend "Gigabyte".
Based on previous discussion, I suspect that things are a little different in the US market !
I have only my experience to rely on. There are no good RMA's, period! Make a liar out of me! Tell me about a distributor that will:
Be local enough to Albany, GA to ship UPS Ground same day as order (if my order is called in by 3:00 PM) and one day get my product to me overnight.
Fill my order accurately.
Be approved by the big manufacturers such as Intel, Microsoft and Asus etc.
ASI meets all of the above but has a lousy RMA policy so here is the kicker:
If I call in an RMA request by 3:00 PM, cross ship my replacement the same day, UPS Ground, overnight.
Show me a supplier that will do all of the above and I most likely will change suppliers.
Until then all I have to go on is experience. I buy products that seldom require an RMA. Out of over 253 new custom built computers sold Intel has never let me down. I have returned only one stick of Crucial memory. Asus motherboard failures happen only once every two years on the average (unless electrical surge damage fries a board).
I have to pay for replacing a motherboard (or any component) under my warranty + I have to pay the shipping one way on the RMA. I really get burned if I have moved on to a later model when I RMA a component. Then I have to discount the older replacement component and sell it in a new build and tell the customer why they are receiving a discount. The computer dealers who build and sell used computers have an outlet for these older components. I do not deal with used computers so I have no good outlet. Again, my best defense is to buy components based on:
1. Lowest failure rate.
2. Performance
3. Price
Sometimes #2 and #3 fight over 2nd place but Lowest Failure Rate holds the #1 spot.
There is immense pressure for me to do 2 things:
#1. Build in sufficient mark-up to eat warranty losses (except for the salvage value I can recover from a RMA replacement part they send to me.)
#2. Build and sell used computers so I will have boxes to install these used pulls etc. and repaired components that I eventually receive when I RMA an item.
Until things change, any RMA is a dog, period!
