MsWord sometimes gets confused when it finds and tries to look at recovery 
files - so try hiding them in a subdirectory while you
try MsWord again
( look under your version of
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
)

Or -
use the MSWord   File Open and set type to 'Recover Text From Any File'
(Boy can you see some interesting things in files using that mode)

As a last resort  you can rename the files to type .txt and try Wordpad to copy 
and paste bits you can recognise into a new file
(renaming the type stops wordpad trying to open the file as if it was a valid 
MSWord file
