This normally shows up as a "not enough memory" message, and the xcopy task fails. I think it is caused by having too many characters in a pathname.
I also usually take the precaution of doing a dir/s on both drives to check for a correct copy.

IMHO the cheapest way is to run xcopy /r/i/c/h/k/e/y then if & when the system's main drive conks out put the USB drive in it's place, boot the Xp Cd, go to the Recovery Console & run "fixboot", remove cd & boot as one normally would.
