Check for disk IO having gone back to PIO 
don't know why, but one of my clients system did that 
just wanted telling to use DMA, and things got much faster.

Also check if NIS is doing 'smart' check when it's checking, or fully scanning 
every file you access 

Final thought do you have multiple firewalls/virus protection processes running 
concurrently 
( e.g. XP's own, and Symantec's)
