As Hugh says - It does not perform a restart of the system, just a 'Recovery of the filemanager/explorer facility.
That will allow you to run programs etc.. It will NOT have set your system up with the proper anti-virus/anti-worm/anti-spyware facilities activated as they would be in your normal restart So your system will be far more open to 'infection' while running in the 'recovery' mode.. You should treat that as Windows giving you a chance to shut your activities and system down as fast as you can, including pulling the connection to the modem or broadband while you do the shutdown JimB. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hugh Gundersen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 8:11 AM Subject: Re: USB device systray icon disappears On Mon, 30 May 2005 00:03:43 -0500, you wrote: >Sometimes windows explorer terminates due to some bug or error. >I can restart the explorer and it seems to run OK but in the mean time several >icons in systray disappear even though the programs corresponding to them >still seem to be running. >This causes some problem since I can manage those program. >These icons reappear when I just restart the computer. > >However if one of missing icons refers to my external USB device which >normally requires >the icon to gracefully power down the device. >I do not know how to reclaim the lost icon in order to close the device >otherwise >I get a warning that I should use the icon to close the device. >Does any one know how to recover the icon because I could not find the program >that corresponds to this icon. I had this problem. Found a naughty on the system - can't remember what it was exactly but one of the ones on Symantec's site. The bugger couldn't be deleted so I had to boot into DOS and remove it manually. It was one of these duplicating worms that changes it's name and location. However, as this didn't completely cure the problem - just lessened it - I eventually reinstalled a clean copy of XP pro and rebuilt the C drive by re-installing everything. Since running an ADSL modem/router with a hardware firewall, Windows firewall on all machines (including my FTP server) Norton AV, Microsoft Anti-spy, Ad-Aware SE 1.05 (1.06 now) and McAfee anti Spy ware I can honestly state that I have no reoccurrences whatsoever of this phenomenon. On the other hand Windows will "reboot" itself automatically and will often "refresh" automatically. The more memory you have the less likelyhood of this "reboot" procedure happening. The reboot is the "Explorer" part which is a major system of XP and the whole OS is built around Explorer as it is the real "shell" of the OS and it is Explorer rebooting not the entire OS. When this happens the "startup" folder is not read so to get it all back "tickety-boo" run all the progs in your start-up folder (if they are there) or re-start the machine................ only way back that I have found.
