Thanks for making that point about Japan -- it had escaped me. Oy!!! I'm
struggling through all these sites. Unfortunately it isn't even me who is
going to be doing all the traveling. :-(

I have no interest in the company. I have been checking this out as I am

A friend travels to Europe a lot. Mostly England but sometimes France and
Japan.
Of course none of the phones previously discussed will work in Japan as
Japanese cell phones use highly specialized CDMA technology that is
incompatible with most other cell phone systems. If you are visiting
Japan you will need a Japanese phone.
They would need the $49 phone for Europe & the $79 phone for Japan but the
Japanese phone requires a $19 mo contract for 12 months.
The only way they can meet all the requirements for cell phone coverage
they would need a satellite phone & the rental rates for that is only
$11/day & the only problem with those is one can't use them indoors or
close to a building or trees as one needs a line of sight to the satellite
even then that does NOT meet the requirement to be inexpensive. As I
stated earlier there is just too many requirements & the adding the
requirement to buy the thing in the states puts the whole deal over the
top some how.
I actually don't understand the original problem as it's worded like there
are no such thing as a land line & a telephone credit card. No matter what
the air time rates alone are a killer for international calls. I can
understand wanting to check on a sick friend or relative but that does NOT
mean a cell phone is required. If the person is so sick that they may not
be around when you get back from your trip then don't go & if one can't
take the time to find a land line to check on the friend or relative then
I'd say that friend or relative doesn't mean that much to them. Now if the
sick person was walking or moving around without assistance then I can see
them needing a cell phone for emergencies but not the other way around.
I don't believe it. Was that me that was arguing against technology?
