Microsoft has a new Windows Update Application (If you open the Windows
Update website you see a flat panel monitor in the Welcome area and you
can choose either the Express or Custom update method.)

Depends on what you consider new. Windows Update v5 has been around a while.
Many of you have warned us of trusting Microsoft updates.
......................
I hope some of the automatically generated requests for updated software
are directed directly to the site of the hardware manufacturer, for simplicity.
Sorry & their is no way that MSFT can issue hardware drivers & firmware
updates as fast as the manufacturers do as all of the drivers have to go
thru MSFT quality control checking before it gets added to the update
website & gets the Windows Xp approval. Most manufacturers tell you that
when you install the latest drivers that you'll get a popup saying that the
driver isn't on the MSFT HCL [yet] to click ignore to continue with the
installation.
Current improvements I see are the optional updates for hardware and
software. Up until this new update software was installed I had to use a
downloaded file to install Windows Media Player 10. Now it is in the
custom updates. I had to furnish audio drivers in many instances for the
popular AC'97 audio. Now it is spoon fed to me in custom hardware updates.
And this driver could be old as compared to the manufacturer's website but
if that's good enough for you then great. AC'97 isn't exactly state of the
art & I doubt those drivers are updated anywhere near as much as one you
just acquired a new top of the line video card. I still recommend that
peeps go to the manufacturer for driver upgrades as oppose to using MSFT
especially if they have an issue they're trying to resolve.
I also see this, "Upgrade to Microsoft Update. Automatically receive
updates for Windows, Office and more"
I checked it and it appears to be free.
Yes, it's free & it has been final for a little while as well as I posted
about it June 13th

Just sharing my observations here and hoping Longhorn makes the update
process simple.
I'm sure that Longhorn will utilize Windows & Microsoft Updates & that the
update engines will be updated in the future as well as not many things
remain stagnant for very long in the state of the art tech world.
