seems I have wasted the lists time :) I downloaded Nero's cleanpack, and ran the registry checker, which reported (unidentified) errors, which it then cleaned and I rebooted. DVD playback is now back to normal. I suspect it was the installation/removal of an app called RatDVD that caused the issue
